MISHAWKA, Ind. (FOX 5 Atlanta) - An Army veteran has been reunited with the dog that served by his side in Afghanistan.
Joseph Steenbeke and his family adopted Tess, a Belgian Malinois.
The 11-year-old dog spent her entire time in Afghanistan sniffing out bombs.
Joseph's wife Stephanie contacted their congresswoman, who made sure the Indiana couple would be first in line to adopt Tess when she retired.
"It's a little piece of me that I didn't really ever think I would get back," Steenbeke said through happy tears. "But it's something my wife fought really hard for."
Joseph has been trying to reunite with his four-legged friend for nearly six years.
He even has her ID number tattooed on his arm.
