When severe weather hits, early preparedness can help reduce stress and saves lives. The FOX 5 Storm Team would like to remind viewers to keep an emergency kit on hand to ensure that you and your family will be ready when the time comes. A first aid kit, bottled water and non-perishable food items are all on the supply list, but the most important item to have in an emergency is a weather radio.

These days, there are several ways to get severe weather warnings. TV, social media, websites and the FOX 5 Storm Team app, for example, are all considered “first tier” modes of communication, or the ones we use the most. But if the cable or power goes out, your cell phone battery dies or you are fast asleep, you need another method. That is when having a weather radio can make a world of difference.

A NOAA weather radio, such as those offered by Midland, is like a “smoke detector for storms”. It allows the user to receive alerts and warnings for their specific area, with instant weather information delivered directly from the National Weather Service. Available in a variety of indoor and outdoor models, these radios deliver alerts night and day— even in the event of a power outage, as most are battery-powered or offer a backup battery supply.

“Between on-air, cell phones, and having a NOAA weather radio, we should no longer hear the phrase, ‘it came without warning,’” urges FOX 5 Storm Team Chief Meteorologist David Chandley.
In addition to delivering potentially life-saving weather alerts, several models also offer other great features that can help you cross off a few more items on your preparedness checklist. The Desktop Weather Alert Radio includes an alarm clock with snooze feature, which means you can toss out your old alarm clock. The robust Compact Emergency Crank Wx Radio comes equipped with an extremely bright flashlight, SOS beacon that uses Morse code for emergency assistance and smartphone/tablet charger.

From now until March 13, through a special partnership with Kroger and Midland, FOX 5 viewers can take advantage of special promotional pricing for both of these emergency radios. The Desktop Weather Alert Radio, which retails for $49.99, is now available at Kroger for $29.99, and the MSRP $59.99 Compact Emergency Crank Wx Radio is being offered at only $39.99. Look for the FOX 5 Storm Team and Midland radio display at area Kroger stores.

A weather radio might be the most important item in your emergency preparedness kit, but the work doesn’t stop there.

“While receiving the warning in multi-layers is paramount, the end goal is to make sure your family has a severe weather plan,” advises Chandley. “’Where do we go?’ ‘What do we bring?’ are conversations you need to have now—not when the storm is hitting.”
