The Athens-Clarke County Police officer who was killed in the line of duty will be honored Thursday.
The Georgia Department of Transportation will name the bridge on Atlanta Highway over the Middle Oconee River after Athens-Clarke County Senior Police Officer Elmer "Buddy" Christian III.
The veteran officer was fatally shot by recently convicted killer Jamie Hood on March 22, 2011.
Christian was survived by his wife, two children, his parents, and one brother.
Officer Tony Howard was also injured in the incident.
This past session, the Georgia General Assembly approved the memorial.
A dedication ceremony will be held 3 p.m. Thursday at the Beech Haven Baptist Church Fellowship Hall located at 2390 West Broad Street in Athens.
