EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - A female University of Oregon student who was a member of the school's acrobatics and tumbling team has died. A county public health official says the death is being investigated for any links to a recent outbreak of a contagious bacterial infection.
The university's athletics department identified the student who died Tuesday afternoon as 18-year-old freshman Lauren Jones.
Acrobatics and tumbling head coach Chelsea Shaw called the death "a terrible and sudden loss for our whole Oregon community."
Jones graduated from Southwest DeKalb High School in Lithonia, Georgia, in 2014.
University spokeswoman Julie Brown tells The Oregonian that Jones lived on campus and an ambulance was called to her residence hall. No other details were immediately available.
The Register-Guard reports that Lane County Public Health spokesman Jason Davis says an autopsy is planned Wednesday and health officials plan tests to determine whether Jones died from complications of meningococcemia.
Three UO students have been hospitalized with the infection.
