Pike Nurseries: Repotting houseplants and outdoor container gardens

Out with the old and in with the new! It's a New Year, and now is a great time to refresh your home by repotting existing plants or creating new container gardens. Here are some quick tips to design, pot and plant a stunning container garden to welcome 2015!

·         Choose a Container

o   Glazed pottery is the most popular and comes in array of colors

o   Lightweight pottery is easier to move

    o   Refresh an existing pot

·         Potting Soil

o   Make sure to choose a nutrient-rich potting soil like Pike's Potting Soil Mix

o   Fill the pot, leaving about an inch empty at the top

§  Pike Nurseries will supply Pike's Potting Soil Mix FREE if you bring in a pot to be repotted this weekend during the Potting Party Weekend!

o   Mix in a handful of EB Stone Sure Start

§  EB Stone Sure Start reduces transplant shock and promotes root growth for healthy plants

§  Pike Nurseries will also add EB Stone Sure Start FREE if you bring in a pot to be repotted this weekend!

·         Choosing Plants

    o   Thriller Plants

§  A tall and upright plant

§  Place in middle of the container if it will be viewed from all angles or at the back of the pot if it will only be viewed from one side

    o   Filler Plants

§  Medium size plants that "fill" in container garden

§  Place around the thriller plant

    o   Spiller Plants

§  Plants that trail over the side of the pot.

§  Gives the pot a softer, more cottage garden look.

§  Place at edge of container

·         Tips to Make Your Container Garden Look Like It Was Done By a Professional

o   Fill the container. Plant your flowers tightly  together in the container so it is overflowing with foliage and flowers

o   Moss around the edge of the container so you don't see the dirt

·         Care

o   Container gardens are really easy to care for – just water your container garden 2 or 3 times a week!
