Police release list of top cars stolen in Atlanta

Atlanta Police shared with FOX 5 News their list of the top cars stolen or cars involved in attempted thefts in 2015, and they notice a surprising trend.

"Clearly our Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Plymouth make vehicles are certainly being stolen at a much higher rate," said Major Timothy Peek, Commander of the Atlanta Police Zone 6 Precinct. "It is probably some of the older models, close to 2007 and prior to that particular year, they are easier to steal."

The types of cars targeted in the most thefts and attempted thefts in Atlanta are as follows, with the number of incidents:

1. Dodge Caravan, 172
2. Honda Accord, 123
3. Jeep Cherokee, 114
4. Jeep Liberty, 96
5. Chevy Impala, 56
6. Jeep Grand Cherokee, 48
7. Dodge Stratus, 47
8. Toyota Camry, 46
9. Dodge Ram 1500, 43
10. Chrysler Town & Country, 42
11. Dodge Charger, 39
12. Honda Civic, 39
13. Dodge Intrepid, 36
14. Dodge Durango, 35
15. Chrysler Sebring, 35
16. Nissan Maxima, 32

Peek said some of the older models of these vehicles can be stolen with a tool as minimal as a screwdriver. Some of the criminals turn the vehicles for a profit, or use them to steal other vehicles and engage in other crimes.

He advises owners of older cars to invest in anti-theft devices to deter thieves, such as a car alarm, inoperative car starter, or wheel locks.

Peek also said police have stepped up patrols in areas with more numbers of car thefts. The rate for thefts and attempted thefts is up 11 percent for 2015 so far.
