Portia Bruner has a passion for telling stories that resonate long after her stories air. She joined the Fox 5 Atlanta news team in July 2003 as a general assignment reporter and started filling in on the anchor desk in 2006. She covers a wide variety of stories—from crime, politics, and public policy to light-hearted features and consumer news. Portia is currently filling in as a morning anchor each weekday on Good Day Atlanta.
Before joining FOX 5 News, Portia was the consumer reporter for WTKR-TV in Norfolk, Virginia. At WTKR, one of her stories helped lead to the arrest of con-artists who were operating fraudulent charities after the September 11th terrorist attacks. Another story resulted in the removal of lead-tainted toy jewelry from a national discount store. Prior to her work in Virginia, Portia was a 5 p.m. co-anchor and a reporter for WAPT-TV in Jackson, Mississippi. Her professional journalism career began in the Consumer News Department at NBC4-TV in Washington, D.C. where she served as researcher, producer and intern coordinator. A former NBC4 intern, she was offered that job just a few weeks after she graduated Magna Cum Laude from Howard University in 1995, where she served as Editor-in-Chief of The Hilltop Newspaper.
Portia is an award-winning journalist who enjoys mentoring metro Atlanta high school students and aspiring young reporters. She also enjoys empowering young women with the social, professional and financial skills necessary to thrive in their own career fields. But she cherishes nothing more than her role as the mother of two bright and energetic 7 and 9 year old sons.
